The Tempe police and fire departments are searching for those responsible for intentionally igniting several fires in northern Tempe over the past month.

Five potentially deadly fires were set in the Scottsdale Gateway Apartments near North Scottsdale and East McKellips roads between July 11 and Aug. 23, with three of the incidents occurring in one day on Aug. 23, according to a statement released by the Tempe Fire Department on Thursday.

Investigators believe all five fires were arson. The fires were detected early and extinguished by fire crews before spreading, the release said.

If the fires were left undiscovered for a longer amount of time, they all could have caused death and major property damage, the statement said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Tempe Police Department at 480-350-8311 or the Phoenix Fire Department Arson Hotline at 1-800-352-7766.

Any information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the fires can result in a reward of up to $10,000.
